The non-profit GNOME Foundation is the home to dozens of open source software applications. Its most visible offering is the GNOME Desktop, which powers some of the most widely used Linux desktop operating systems in the world. Release 40 was a step technically, and leap symbolically for the project. Whereas prior release videos were focused on its current users, this release video would serve as an introduction to those not familiar with the Linux desktop ecosystem. The aim was to present the desktop experience as on-par with the leading commercial offerings from Apple and Microsoft, while also highlighting the unique community values that makes GNOME different.
